Norway in June

Reviewed By: Lanham, Colchester on 5th Jul 2008

Cruise Ship: Queen Elizabeth 2 Sailed: June, 2008
Destination: Norwegian Fjords Age: 65+
Having recently cruised on the QM2 we decided to cruise on the QE2 before her retirement to Dubai in October. Although a grand old traditional ship we felt that standards had slipped and certain parts of the ship was showing its age. Our cabin on deck 3 was the main problem which was very small with very shabby decor and looked 40 years old! The worse thing was the ship noise at night when we barely slept it was so loud and as the cruise was sold out unable to change our cabin. I felt lack of sleep became a health hazard and we were unable to enjoy on board activities to the full. Other passengers were also commenting on the noise on others decks so had it always been a noisy ship or has it just been neglected due to her forthcoming retirement. The ballroom was great but for Sequence Dancing there was only CD music which had been left by previous passengers and strict tempo music was also very limited.

On the whole we enjoyed the cruise and the fiords of Norway in June were very picturesque even if the sun didn't shine very much!

If you think the ship is noisy now i can assure you it was much noisier when it was being built. I was brought up near Clydebank and remember her launching. It was the best nights sleep the locals had for 3 years. I will be sailing on her soon and am looking forward to the experience. 80 metre long propeller shafts spinning 6 metre diameter props at 140rpm and driving her along at 30knts plus - you will never experience that on a cruise ship again;-Azipod propulsion may be quietly efficient but couldnt deliver performance like that. ENJOY IT FOR WHAT IT IS:- An engineering marvel with a timeless elegance although its a pity she's not steam turbine driven any more.

This was my 8th cruise & final on QE2 & travelling once again in the Queens Grill grade it was superb. Food & service were 1st class & I had a very spacious one deck single cabin / my parents were on Signal deck - their first time on QE2 & they were very impressed. Standards if anything get better each time you go back to the ship & it is very sad that I no longer can go back!!!! but am trying the QV next October but no for sure that she cannot compete with the QE2!!! A class act to follow. So sorry to hear about the problems with your cabin & noise!
