QE 2 Trans Atlantic

Travelled on the QE2 Trans Atlantic to New York in January with my wife, we had booked a Princess Grill category cabin and was delighted to be upgraded to the Queens Grill once on board. The stateroom although clean and tidy was looking a bit tired, the cabin steward was a bit up himself , as if he could tell we were free upgrades and had'nt paid the extra thousands for the trip and was not very helpfull. With Cunard the service charge/gratuities is automatically charged to your onboard account so I think this may have led to his attitude ! Apart from that the Grand old Liner was gracefull and the service onboard was generally first class, having sailed on her before and eaten in the Caronia Restaurant I can honestly say that I did'nt find the food in the Queens Grill that much better and certainly not worth paying all that extra money for. The trans Atlantic experience was awsome and unforgettable.

This may interest you, if you should choose to cruise with Cunard again. Although the gratuities are automatically charged to your on board account, they may be removed if you so wish. You can request a Gratuity Waiver Form from the Purser's Office which you may sign to have the gratuities removed. You can then choose to reward the staff members that have given you good service. I chose to do this on both QE2 and Queen Victoria and rewarded individual staff accordingly. However,it's always a concern as to whether staff members get the money or whether they have to hand over to management. Happy cruising Regards Jan

This is absolutely correct, the "automatic" addition of $11 to $12 per person per day for tips is discretionary and will be removed on request - but make sure you request this at the Purser's Office as soon as you can after getting on board. Your account will still show the tips however until the last day when the amount is removed. If you tip individuals it is customary for them to share the tip amongst those "unseen" staff who additionally assist them. That may be by them putting the tip into a Company pool I guess though.
