I have been lucky enough to have sailed on QE2 almost annually over the last 20 years and sadly this was my last trip - disembarking at Southampton was an emotional event!
It was a fantastic trip visiting Iceland and Norway. To me there is no better way to travel! Sitting in a deckchair gazing across a sparkling sea and watching the dramatic coastlines of Ireland and Iceland appear to float by and then later on in the trip as QE2 glides almost silently as it squeezes its way through huge mountains as it travels miles inland on the Norwegian fiords. All ports of call were interesting ranging from cities to small fiordside villages. A spectacular send off from Stavanger when we were escorted out by several hundred boats of all sizes. (Youtube - enter QE2 Stavanger to see some film of this)
Despite being taken out of service in a few months time the standards of service and maintainance on board are as high as usual. Regular passengers and crew alike were making the most of the time left before QE2 goes to Dubai and her unique community is disbanded.
We had a very comfortable M4 inside cabin which was well looked after by our very helpful steward Rommel who kept it spotlessly clean and tidy. As long as the position of the cabin is good we do worry about not having a porthole as most people only use cabins for sleeping etc.
We ate breakfast and dinner in The Lido (informal) restaurant where the food and service could not be faulted. It tends to get rather busy at breakfast time but very peaceful, uncrowded and relaxed for dinner in the evening. Lunchtimes in the Lido inevitably are much more hectic so my preference is to eat in the Mauritania as it is an open sitting and not at all busy.
Great range of entertainment for all tastes but not enough time to do it all!
Thanks to Chloe at Cruise.Co.uk for her excellent help booking the cruise.
