I sailed for the first time with Cunard this year and I can truly say that it was a fantastic experience. My travel companian had been several times with them so they came highly recommended and she was not wrong! We flew to New York for three nights which is just the best city. Plenty of shopping and sightseeing and the weather was glorious. We then transfered to Brooklyn harbour to join the Queen Mary 2. (My friend had wheelchair assistance ordered and this was a great help for her. They literally whizzed her through the queues and right to the cabin door!) We stayed in a Princess suite on deck 10 and it was really lovely. Very spacious as cabins go with light modern decor, a large sofa, seperate little luggage room, very nice bathroom with seperate bath and overhead shower (many cabins on other ships are not large enough for baths so this was definately a plus!) wardrobes, digital safe and large balcony with two loungers. Two bottles of sparkling wine, fresh fruit and flowers awaited us and our cabin steward introduced herself and gave us some initial information. Sailing away from New York was for me, one of the highlights. The band was playing on the deck, the sun was shining and the view of the skyline and Statue of Liberty was breathtaking. Back in our cabin we stood on the balcony and watched the ship sail under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge which it clears with a matter of feet to spare! I wondered how we would spend the next six days at sea, but there is so much to do on board, I don't feel like I had time to indulge in all the facilities. There is a spa, library, games area, casino, theatre, ballroom, Planetarium/cinema, pool areas, photo gallery (which is very interesting), shops, bars and of course the fantastic restaurants!! The food onboard was excellent and the staff in the Princess Grill were really top class. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they were most helpful and courteous. Could not speak highly enough of them. If you don't feel like eating at your designated restaurant, there is a food court which is buffet style and seems to be open nearly all day! The food of course is included in the cruise cost so you only pay for your drinks onboard and I was surprised how reasonable the prices were. You could have a cocktail for aprox $4/$5 and a good bootle of wine for aprox $40 so in pounds sterling they are quite good considering where you are! Every day you have a programme delivered to your cabin with a list of the events taking place throughout the ship etc. This is very useful and stops you missing something of interest to you. Also there are stalls set up daily on deck 3 by the Mayfair shops and they have different offers of perfume, jewellery, bags etc which is great for shopaholics! You don't have to carry cash with you as everything gets charged to your room key and you settle your bill at the end of the voyage at the pursers desk. Payment can be made by credit card, cash or dollar travellers cheques (as everything is priced in dollars on board.) I would definately recommend Cunard and the Queen Mary and hope I get the opportunity to sail on her again.
