We checked in at Southampton about 2.00 p.m. The shore staff were excellent, we were directed to a check in desk as soon as we entered the building and were onboard within 15 minutes. The decor of the Queen Mary 2 is beautiful, the atrium and staircase simply amazing. Our cabin which had a sheltered balcony was spacious, with plenty of storage space. We were unsure what 'sheltered balcony' meant beforehand, but in fact the best way to describe this was 'looking out of a tissue box' it had a solid front and in order to look out you did have to stand up to do so. This type of balcony could be a boon on a rough transatlantic crossing though. The bathroom was spacious enough with good selection of toiletries, our cabin steward was wonderful and attended to our requests promptly and cheerfully (even our 'flat' bottle of sailaway bubbly). We had opted for second sitting in the Britannia Restaurant and did manage to get out on time to see the show, which was very good. There was plenty of entertainment on board, even though we didn't manage to partake in most of them. We didn't book any excursions, and just wandered in Cherbourg before coming back for lunch. We decided we would like longer on the QM2 and have booked a cruise in January 2009.
